Sammie Thompson began writing early in life. Because of her creative flair, her 8th grade teacher appointed her Editor of the grade school yearbook, and gave free rein create the copy and the layout, including a photo montage page. She relished the challenge, and brought a smile to her teacher, perhaps one of relief.
She continued writing through high school, also studying photography, took a college course in writing, and began to free-lance. Her professional writing career began in 1973 when she went to work for a community newspaper where her articles and photography won commendations from the publishers.
In 1977, Sammie Thompson wrote an article on parenting as part of her daughter's homework assignment. That article was first published in the Blue Star Journal, Cincinnati, Ohio, reprinted in a number of other publications, and has been distributed around the world. She is now getting feedback from parents who used it to raise their children, and from children who were raised according to the parenting principles she shared.
In 1982, Sammie won a photography contest sponsored by AMFAC, parent company of Fred Harvey Co. She hiked into the Grand Canyon with her youngest daughter to take a photo of Phantom Ranch. The photograph was made into company Christmas cards, and other cards which were sold at the El Tovar Hotel, Grand Canyon.
In 1983, Sammie won two writing awards from Arizona Press Women: one first-place award for an interview with photos of Red Skelton; and a second-place award for a photo article about the closing of Casey's Corner, an historic local landmark in Cornville, Arizona.
She teaches writing and songwriting classes when scheduling permits. A current songwriting/composing class is being formed.
Sammie has completed her first book - "Remember Who You Are" - now being prepared for publication and has several other writing projects in progress at the present time.
